General Overview

1. How is the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System format different, and how do existing customers transition into the new system?
The TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System format integrates all core TRICOM modules into a step-by-step progression, so you move through the entire curriculum in a structured way. Instead of progressing through individual modules separately, you’ll now experience a cohesive learning path that builds on each step. Existing customers will benefit from their previous training and may be eligible for special discounts.

2. Is the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System made up of pieces from the existing course catalog?
Yes, the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System combines the primary TRICOM modules into a single cohesive progression. It also includes new, exclusive training content, with some modules organized into specialized tracks for specific roles or environments (such as firearms modules for armed professionals and legally armed citizens).

3. What modules are included in the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
The TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System gives you access to the full core TRICOM curriculum — the foundation of weapon and counter-weapon tactics, striking, grappling, and close-quarters combat, structured into progressive levels of training and rank advancement.

It does not include specialist tracks that are tailored for specific professions or demographics, such as law enforcement cuffing and searching, firearms tactics, weapon retention, women’s self-defense, or executive protection/third-party intervention. Those remain separate training modules.

4. Are the techniques in the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System the same as in previous modules?
While the core techniques remain the same, the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System includes new supplemental drills and techniques, especially for those advancing to higher ranks.

5. Will there be new content exclusive to the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
Yes! As you progress through the curriculum, there will be new, exclusive content tailored to more advanced levels, ensuring your training remains dynamic and challenging.

6. How is this different from the TRICOM Fundamentals module?
The TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System expands on the Fundamentals course, diving deeper into more advanced material across the broader TRICOM system. It includes exclusive content not found in the Fundamentals course.

7. Which path should I take—Instructor certification in a specific module or the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
It depends on your goals. If you only need to master or teach one module, a specific certification might be sufficient. However, if you want a comprehensive understanding of the entire TRICOM system, or if you plan to certify others, the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System is the best path.

For Existing Customers and Discounts

8. Will existing module owners receive a lower price for the new system?
Yes, discounts will be available for those who already own individual TRICOM modules. You’ll be able to transition into the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System at a reduced rate, making this a great value for previous customers.

9. Will there be a military or veteran discount for the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
Yes, a small discount will be available to active or reserve Law Enforcement and Armed Forces (LEAF) members, recognizing their service and dedication.

For Instructors

10. As an instructor for one or more modules, do I still need this system?
While not mandatory for instructors already certified in individual modules, it’s highly recommended for those who wish to teach the full TRICOM system. It will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the entire curriculum.

11. Will I become a TRICOM Instructor in this TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
To become a TRICOM Instructor under this TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System, you’ll need to complete Level 4. This will provide you with full certification to teach all TRICOM material.

12. Can TRICOM instructors certify students under this new grading system?
Only instructors certified in the full TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System (Level 4) will be eligible to assess and certify students. Instructors certified in specific modules will be restricted to evaluating students in their certified areas.

13. Will instructors certified in particular TRICOM modules have a separate grading and certification process within the system?
The grading and certification process remains the same across all instructors. However, instructors with current certifications may be eligible for the Fast Track grading timeline, which will reduce the minimum time between levels.

Student Eligibility and Evaluation Process

14. Will students training under me be eligible for grading, or is it only through Master Instructors?
All students enrolled in the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System are eligible for grading. However, grading will be conducted by authorized Master Instructors to ensure high standards of evaluation.

15. Do I need a training partner for grading, or can I do it solo?
A demonstration partner is required for all grading evaluations. This ensures that you can showcase your skills in a realistic context.

16. Will the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System include live training or just online evaluations?
Levels 1 and 2 can be evaluated online, while Levels 3 and 4 require in-person evaluations. The online system provides flexibility, but live training ensures more accurate assessments at the advanced levels.

Progression and Certification

17. What’s the difference between Levels and Tiers in the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?

The 4 Levels represent your overall progression through the system — moving step by step from beginner to advanced. Levels don’t represent particular subtopics; instead, they mark your advancement as you train and test through the core curriculum. You could compare each Level to the belt colors in a traditional martial arts system.

Within each Level, the material is broken into 4 Tiers, similar to the stripes on a belt in a traditional martial arts system. The Tiers follow a general subtopic outline that spreads the curriculum fairly evenly across each Level, with a few minor exceptions to balance the training material. The subtopics of each Tier in all four Levels are divided as follows:

Tier 1: Empty Hand Tactics

Tier 2: Utilization of Weaponry / Force Multipliers

Tier 3: Counter Assault Tactics

Tier 4: Grappling & Ground Tactics

In short: Levels = your progression through the TRICOM system. Tiers = your progression through each Level.

18. How long does it take to complete each level?
The time it takes to complete each level depends on how much time you dedicate to training and practice. Each level is divided into 4 subranks, which can be tested every 3 months. With consistent training, each level can be completed in approximately one year. There are also Fast Track options for individuals with advanced martial arts backgrounds.

19. Is there a certification upon completing the TRICOM Self-Defense and Combat System?
Yes! Upon successful completion of Level 4, you will be certified as a Full TRICOM Instructor. Certifications are issued at each level, so you'll receive recognition as you progress through the system.
