TRICOMÂ GRADING SYSTEM
What if, in a split second, your safety—or the safety of someone you love—depended entirely on you?
Â
Would you be ready?
The reality is, most self-defense programs fail under real-world pressure. They focus on flashy techniques, complex drills, and sport-based applications that fall apart when violence becomes unpredictable and unforgiving.
Jared Wihongi, an internationally recognized expert in police, military, and executive protection combatives, has seen firsthand how traditional martial arts fail in real-world encounters. What works in a controlled dojo setting often collapses under the stress and chaos of an actual violent encounter.
This is exactly why THE TRICOM GRADING SYSTEM: The Complete Curriculum for Mastering TRI-ANGLE COMBATIVES was developed—providing a structured, progressive, and battle-tested approach to real-world combatives training.
For the first time, THE TRICOM GRADING SYSTEM is available through an online training and grading platform, allowing individuals to train systematically from fundamentals to advanced tactics, anytime, anywhere, and at their own pace.
A Complete Roadmap for Learning and Progressing in TRICOM

TRICOM Grading System FAQs
Â
General Overview
Â
1. How is the new grading format different, and how do existing customers transition into the new system?
The new grading format integrates all core TRICOM modules into a step-by-step progression, so you move through the entire curriculum in a structured way. Instead of progressing through individual modules separately, you’ll now experience a cohesive learning path that builds on each step. Existing customers will benefit from their previous training and may be eligible for special discounts. Â
Â
2. Is the new system made up of pieces from the existing course catalog?
Yes, the TRICOM Grading System combines the primary TRICOM modules into a single cohesive progression. It also includes new, exclusive training content, with some modules organized into specialized tracks for specific roles or environments (such as firearms modules for armed professionals and legally armed citizens).
Â
3. Are the techniques in the new grading system the same as in previous modules?
While the core techniques remain the same, the grading system includes new supplemental drills and techniques, especially for those advancing to higher ranks.
Â
4. Will there be new content exclusive to the grading system?
Yes! As you progress through the curriculum, there will be new, exclusive content tailored to more advanced levels, ensuring your training remains dynamic and challenging.
Â
5. How is this different from the TRICOM Fundamentals module?
The TRICOM Grading System expands on the Fundamentals course, diving deeper into more advanced material across the broader TRICOM system. It includes exclusive content not found in the Fundamentals course.
Â
6. Which path should I take—Instructor certification in a specific module or the TRICOM Grading System?
It depends on your goals. If you only need to master or teach one module, a specific certification might be sufficient. However, if you want a comprehensive understanding of the entire TRICOM system, or if you plan to certify others, the TRICOM Grading System is the best path.
Â
For Existing Customers and Discounts
Â
7. Will existing module owners receive a lower price for the new system?
Yes, discounts will be available for those who already own individual TRICOM modules. You’ll be able to transition into the new grading system at a reduced rate, making this a great value for previous customers.
Â
8.Will there be a military or veteran discount for the TRICOM Grading System?
Yes, a small discount will be available to active or reserve Law Enforcement and Armed Forces (LEAF) members, recognizing their service and dedication.
Â
For Instructors
Â
9. As an instructor for one or more modules, do I still need this system?
While not mandatory for instructors already certified in individual modules, it’s highly recommended for those who wish to teach the full TRICOM system. It will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the entire curriculum.
Â
10. Will I become a TRICOM Instructor in this new grading system?
To become a TRICOM Instructor under this new grading system, you’ll need to complete Level 4. This will provide you with full certification to teach all TRICOM material.
Â
11. Can TRICOM instructors certify students under this new grading system?
Only instructors certified in the full TRICOM Grading System (Level 4) will be eligible to assess and certify students. Instructors certified in specific modules will be restricted to evaluating students in their certified areas.
Â
12. Will instructors certified in particular TRICOM modules have a separate grading and certification process within the system?
The grading and certification process remains the same across all instructors. However, instructors with current certifications may be eligible for the Fast Track grading timeline, which will reduce the minimum time between levels.
Â
Student Eligibility and Evaluation Process
Â
13. Will students training under me be eligible for grading, or is it only through Master Instructors?
All students enrolled in the TRICOM Grading System are eligible for grading. However, grading will be conducted by authorized Master Instructors to ensure high standards of evaluation.
Â
14. Do I need a training partner for grading, or can I do it solo?
A demonstration partner is required for all grading evaluations. This ensures that you can showcase your skills in a realistic context.
Â
15. Will the grading system include live training or just online evaluations?
Levels 1 and 2 can be evaluated online, while Levels 3 and 4 require in-person evaluations. The online system provides flexibility, but live training ensures more accurate assessments at the advanced levels.
Â
Progression and Certification
Â
16. How long does it take to complete each level?
The time it takes to complete each level depends on how much time you dedicate to training and practice. Each level is divided into 4 subranks, which can be tested every 3 months. With consistent training, each level can be completed in approximately one year. There are also Fast Track options for individuals with advanced martial arts backgrounds.
Â
17. Is there a certification upon completing the grading system?
Yes! Upon successful completion of Level 4, you will be certified as a Full TRICOM Instructor. Certifications are issued at each level, so you'll receive recognition as you progress through the system.
